When should you go to the veterinary emergency?

The emergency service is strictly for urgent, life-threatening problems only.

Typical emergencies are conditions that are life-threatening or may lead to severe consequences. The emergency service is not for investigating long-standing issues; in such cases first aid may be provided and further tests scheduled later.

Typical emergency cases

  • High fever
  • Severe lethargy
  • Collapse, unconsciousness, seizures
  • Persistent vomiting/diarrhoea causing marked weakness
  • Bloody vomit, bloody urine
  • Bloated abdomen, suspected gastric dilatation/volvulus
  • Inability to urinate
  • Blue gums/tongue, frothy or bloody coughing
  • Dystocia (stuck labour)
  • Severe bite wounds, mauling
  • Severe active bleeding, deep wounds
  • Hit by a car
  • Paralysis of both hind legs or all limbs
  • Prolapsed eyeball
  • Known ingestion of a toxic substance (e.g., antifreeze)
  • Severe allergic reaction (e.g., facial swelling after vaccination), choking, laboured breathing, heatstroke

Other cases may also qualify after a triage phone call with the on-duty vet.

SURGICAL EMERGENCY CARE

The Miskolc Small Animal Emergency Group is a voluntary system where typically one veterinarian provides care. At present, we cannot perform major surgeries that require multiple vets and assistants. Such procedures (e.g., GDV, caesarean section) are available only at 24/7 hospitals.

Emergency service — RULES & FEES

In Hungary there is currently no mandatory or free veterinary emergency service. Out-of-hours care is voluntarily provided by vets without state reimbursement; therefore the cost is borne by the owner.

The Miskolc Area Small Animal Emergency Group offers out-of-hours care for its own clients at weekends, on public holidays and on weekdays outside opening hours.

We can only provide the service to patients who normally use one of the group’s clinics during weekdays.

If you usually visit another clinic, please ask your regular vet where you can seek out-of-hours care.

Who qualifies as an own patient of the group?

  • Dogs: received the last vaccination at one of the group’s clinics (must be proven with the vaccination book).
  • Cats, rabbits, ferrets: have previously been treated at one of the group’s clinics for illness.
  • Newly purchased pets under 8 weeks of age without vaccinations.

Please always bring the vaccination book with you!
